Industrial systems can be represented as networks of organizations connected by flows of materials, energy, and money. This network context may produce unexpected consequences in response to policy intervention, so improved understanding is vital; however, industrial network data are commonly unavailable publically. Using a case study in the Humber region, UK, we present a novel methodology of "network coding" of semistructured interviews with key industrial and political stakeholders, in combination with an "industrial taxonomy" of network archetypes developed to construct an approximation of the region's networks when data are incomplete. This article describes our methodology and presents the resulting network.

Abstract Industrial wireless networks are a key technology for the implementation of the Industry 4.0 concepts. Due to its advantages in relation to wired networks, such as flexibility and low cost of installation, these networks are gaining momentum in the recent years. Wireless networks are becoming even more attractive for industrial applications and consequently an increase is expected in the number of wireless devices connected to industrial applications. As a result, efficient network management becomes even more relevant, and consequently new techniques are necessary to cope with new demands. Network management tasks, such as routing, scheduling, coexistence awareness, and mobility, have been in focus of scientific community. However, several important research questions remain open. This paper presents recent works on industrial wireless networks management techniques in addition with the presentation of open research issues.

The overall high-end of strategic emerging industries can be effectively promoted by strengthening the inter-industry innovation linkage effect. This paper constructs a strategic emerging industry innovation network based on industry correlation. This paper studies the development trend of the whole network structure and individual network characteristics and analyzes the influence of network structure characteristics on the attribute performance of each industry. The research results are as follows: (i) The innovation network as a whole was in a slight decline trend of low density during the sample investigation period, and the correlation level had great room for improvement. (ii) The high-end equipment manufacturing industry, the new materials industry, and the new-generation information technology industry occupy the center of the network, but their spillover effect on other industries is poor, and some industries even get more innovation benefits. (iii) The innovation network of China's strategic emerging industries has the characteristics of cross-industry clustering, and the linkage effect between plates is insufficient, showing the characteristics of the "reflexivity" aggregation subgroup. (iv) The unreasonable connection mode of strategic emerging industries' innovation network leads to the improvement of the centrality degree, which is not conducive to the innovation output of the industry. However, innovation output can be positively affected, to a certain extent, by improving the betweenness and closeness of the industries in the network.

Although informal knowledge networks have often been regarded as a key ingredient behind the success of industrial clusters, the forces that shape their structure and dynamics remain largely unknown. Drawing on recent network dynamic models, we analyze the evolution of business and technical knowledge networks within a toy cluster in Spain. Empirical results suggest that the dynamics of the two networks differ to a large extent. We find that status drives the formation of business knowledge networks, proximity is more crucial for technical knowledge networks, while embeddedness plays an equally important role in the dynamics of both networks.

Customers' needs for a product define the features and attributes of its production. To meet these needs, a group of organisations with complementary strategies, resources and capabilities link together in a manner that all the participants of the consortium benefit. Organisations act in these networks collectively to produce an output that customers value enough to purchase it. However, the crucial value features of products' progress constantly depend on customers' needs. As a consequence, the value network is under a continuous and, at least, partially capricious change. The paper explores why and how the value network emerges and develops from the standpoint of the existing value network theories. The evolutionary (life cycle) perspective is used to combine the views of the different theories to construct a view that explains at least some of the reasons behind, first of all, the emergence and, secondly, development of value networks.

An increasing number of discussions has been ongoing regarding the supply network, primarily due to its contribution to firms' competitiveness, which extends beyond the traditional dyadic relationship between buyers and suppliers. Thus far, one of the most useful approaches to consider the supply network perspective is social network analysis. Accordingly, this study seeks to determine the structural configurations of the supply network, and its characteristics based on the components in these networks, using real industrial data, such as from the entire Korean electronic and metal industries. Specifically, mainly by using network diameter, network density, and network centralization, our study provides some implications of how focal firms' positions on the supply network, and the gap of technological change level are crucial to evaluate the structural configuration of the network. Our findings show that both these aspects are closely related to the structural configuration of the entire supply network, based on its components.

The theory, methodologies, and case studies in the field of industrial symbiosis have been developing for nearly 30 years. In this paper, we trace the development history of industrial symbiosis, and review its current theoretical and methodological bases, as well as trends in current research. Based on the research gaps that we identify, we provide suggestions to guide the future development of this approach to permit more comprehensive analyses. Our theoretical review includes key definitions, a classification system, and a description of the formation and development mechanisms. We discuss methodological studies from the perspective of individual industrial metabolic processes and network analysis. Analyzing specific metabolic processes can help to characterize the exchanges of materials and energy, and to reveal the ecological performance and economic benefits of the symbiosis. Network analysis methods are increasingly being used to analyze both the structural and functional characteristics of a system. Our suggestions for future research focus on three aspects: how to quantitatively classify industrial symbiosis systems, monitor the dynamics of a developing industrial symbiosis system, and analyze its internal attributes more deeply.

As numerous industrial regeneration projects are planned and implemented, it is essential to ensure that these projects will contribute to a more sustainable future, especially for those industrial sites that maintain primary industrial use. This paper suggests that implementing industrial ecology in the regeneration of industrial sites (i.e. sustainable industrial regeneration) is a critical pathway for the ecological transformation of China's local-regional industrial systems. Through the lens of Actor Network Theory (ANT), this paper develops a conceptual framework to re-conceptualize sustainable industrial regeneration as a reassembling process of social-material configuration towards sustainability and to reveal the mechanisms of ecological transformation of industrial networks in China. The detailed case study of Hengding Industrial Park in Shunde District shows that the reassembled industrial network has transformed the poor initial conditions through the implementation of industrial ecology initiatives (e.g. utility sharing and cascade recycling). However, in view of the network convergence and driving forces behind actor enrollment, the actor-networking performance faces a challenge in effectively transforming the sites towards regional industrial ecology. Three conditions strongly influencing the implementation of the eco-transformation pathway in Chinese industrial areas are the highly concentrated power and responsibility of administrative actors, initial industrial site conditions, and cluster-based relationships.

Industrial parks have been playing a crucial role on driving regional economic development, but also been posing threats to local environment due to intensive resource consumption and waste emission. To analyze the trade-off between economic development and environmental pollution, we use an approach based on social and ecologic network analysis to survey the industrial metabolic network and explore their functional characteristics. We conduct a case study in Hefei economic and technological development area, whose components (environment/industrial sectors) are treated as nodes and the relationships (material/energy flows) between nodes are seen as links in this network. Results show that the relationships distribution between components in the entire network basically shows a feature of decentralization. Environment controls the relationships in the network with the greatest advantage. Other industry and fast moving consumer goods industry have considerable ability to build relationships with other components, and are very important for constructing the network. The whole network shows mutualism and synergism based on the ecological relationships between components. In addition the park had a network stability of 0.70, indicating it was in an evolutionary phase, and most material/energy flows are used to improve operational efficiency rather than maintain network stability. This study could provide scientific basis for optimizing industrial park management, thereby reducing environmental pollution and promoting resources conservation.
